Stingers
Description
The design of facilities for the sub-sea installation of pipelines is a highly specialised activity. KCI designs stingers specifically for this purpose. It is a specialised piece of equipment which, when mounted onboard the ship on which the pipelines are welded together, facilitates the process of installing the sub-sea pipelines. This is an expensive undertaking, with installation of sub-sea pipelines typically costing up to One Million Euro per kilometre. The design of the stingers is robust and based on the premise that it must not fail as repairs onboard ship are expensive and space is at a premium. Each stinger is tailor made, the design of which is preceded by an exhaustive analysis phase during which the maximum acceptable loads are calculated and the risk of materials fatigue are assessed. The interactions between the ship and stinger must also be balanced. Ships which are equipped with a stinger often require additional structures in order to ensure balance. KCI also designs the hang off frame and uplift compensation system (for the heavy winches) which control the stinger's movements.
Highlights
- Designed specifically for facilitation of sub-sea pipeline installation.
- Robust design based on premise of non-failure.
- Each is tailor made and preceded by an exhaustive analysis phase.
- Interactions between stinger and vessel compensated by additional structures which are also designed by KCI.
